BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
Working Together for Excellence
As a school we have high expectations of behaviour and it is to their credit that the vast majority of our students adhere to our clearly stated rules.
From the beginning of the summer term we will be revisiting the expectations we have of all students in terms of their commitment to achieving the best. In essence, this means that we will be reminding students of the core rules, (known as ‘The Oxted 5’) which are key contributors in creating the best environment for learning.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind you and the students of our requirements regarding all aspects of their conduct and presentation including punctuality, attendance and uniform. The vast majority of students at Oxted are engaged and positive in attitude, however, there are a small minority who do not always conform to expectations and protocols. Similar to our approach last year, we will be adopting a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy towards students who fail or refuse to conform to our expectations.
I would like to draw your attention to the key aspects of our requirements detailed below and request that you discuss these with your son/daughter:
- Punctuality is extremely important – lateness to registration/class is unacceptable
- Students must come to lessons with the correct equipment in order to learn most effectively
- Students must not use mobile phones in school – these should be switched off if brought to school and placed in bags/lockers – they should not be visible at any point in school
- Ipods/MP3 players headphones must not be used at any point in school, including breaktimes
- Smoking is unacceptable and illegal. If students are caught smoking or in the company of smokers we will contact parents and students will face consequences which may lead to exclusion if the offence is repeated
School uniform should be correctly worn:
- Shoes must be black leather, not trainers
- Only standard school skirts must be worn
- House ties should be done up
- No ‘hoodies’ or cardigans are permissible
- The school has a ‘no piercings’ policy (apart from single studs worn in the earlobe)
- Bracelets, excessive make-up and nail varnish must not be worn
- Hair should be of one natural colour
Most importantly students must ensure that they are always respectful to each other and to staff at all times. In lessons students are expected to listen carefully and to maximise their learning opportunities through active participation in the process of learning. Students should follow instructions from staff the first time they are given.
With your continued support as parents/carers we can ensure that consistently high standards are achieved and maintained. Where students do not conform to our expectations we will contact you and apply sanctions as necessary.
If students have mobile phones that are visible these will be confiscated, to be returned at the end of the day. If there is a repeat confiscation of a mobile phone we will retain it and ask you to collect if from the school the following day.
Students with piercings or unacceptable hairstyles/colours will be sent home to modify their appearance or placed in isolation, until the matter is resolved.
Students in trainers will attend daily lunchtime detentions, until they are in correct school shoes.
Thank you for your support in creating a consistent, excellent environment for learning.
